Stop Coming To My Blog!Feb 27th, 2007 | By Rachit Dayal | Category: News & Updates, This Site, Website Branding
Go on … ask the question … “Rachit, why should I stop coming to your blog?”
I’ll tell you in a second, be patient little one!
Until then, here a little story.
Last week, Calvin dropped me a message saying my website looks weird in IE6 … that the whole side navigation actually appears at the bottom (!!!).
My WordPress template wasn’t showing properly
Needless to say, I was quite shocked! On my own computer, I have IE7 & Mozilla … and I had tested my site. But Internet Explorer 6 has its own quirks.
At first, I thought “Aaah, screw it. Who needs the sidebar.”
But while killing some time in my Google Analytics admin (a system to analyze website visitors), I realized that 35% of my visitors still used Internet Explorer 6.
That’s One out of every Three visitors who couldn’t see my blog properly !
Ok, so obviously I had to change. But I didn’t have the time to go hunt for another template that worked well (as some of you know, I’ve taken up a full-time, very exhausting new role in an exciting startup).
So, I decided to go backwards.
Tadaaa! Let’s go backward in time to my first ever template.
Of course, now I’m much smarter and better at optimizing WordPress and getting things right. So, I set it up in a few short hours.
On further analysis, I realized that my website was also super slow.
Not really sure why this is, all my websites on this server are pretty damn slow these days. In any case, that brings us to the heading of this post.
Stop coming to my blog! You can get all my posts by RSS or Email!
You don’t HAVE to come to the site to read my entries, there are much easier ways to have my posts delivered to you with no effort . For example … have you noticed these little things on the top, right of every page?
You can subscribe the content from this site in a hundred different ways.
First way, RSS Subscriptions(Really Stupid … Err … Something)
RSS stands for Really Stupid Syndication. I’ll stay away from the Really Geeky Explanations.
So, for example you could subscribe to my blog, Andrew’s blog, Stuart‘s blog and Mr Brown’s blog with Google Reader. And you wouldn’t have to keep visiting our sites to see updates! Just open your Google Reader once a day … and you can get all the updates in one place.
So, if you can figure out RSS – I have two feeds up there. One for posts. And another for comments. I have a third button which allows you to add the feed directly to your Feed Reader. And a fourth that allows you to add it to your Bookmarking sites (like digg or del.ico.us)
Honestly, if you don’t know what it means, it’s ok. I got another simpler method for you.
Easier way, Email Subscriptions
You can have every post delivered by email to you as soon as its posted. It’s safe, secure and reliable. Just enter your email address in the box and click subscribe.
When you click subscribe, another box will open up …
It’s pretty standard stuff. To avoid SPAM, you might have to enter a few keywords. And when you do, you’ll get a confirmation email in your inbox … just like the image below.
When you get the email reminder with the feedburner.com link, just click on the link to confirm your subscription.
There, you’re done. You can now receives updates by email.
Sigh … I know it will hurt Alexa rankings … but trust me, getting all your updates in one place (I use Google Reader), is just a huge time saver.
Now, go and subscribe to my feed/email updates.
Why are you still reading!!! Go, subscribe. Bye. Humph.
